Unlikely Romances In Batman: The Animated Series

The Batman lore is filled with many unusual things, and unseemly couples are just one part. Right from Batman-Catwoman to Batgirl-Robin, we have seen some great couples in DC. The animated show, Batman: The Animated Series dug deep into this to carve out the best couple of the Batman mythos. In fact, they went one step further and created the character of Harley Quinn to be the romantic partner for Joker.

Fans were shocked recently by the hookup of Harley Quinn and Nightwing (although for only a night) in the animated film Batman and Harley. However, once you decide to investigate, you will find that the whole animated show is filled with strange and unusual pairings. Let’s take a look at them:

1) Batman and Batgirl

The age difference between the two was enough to get the creeps. Over that, Batgirl was previously dating Nightwing, Batman’s protégé (although that ended in Old Wounds). However, it was established that Batgirl did have a fantasy of Batman (as we saw in Batgirl Returns) and the couple finally got together.

Strangely, we didn’t see much of them even while they were dating. Their relationship was only mentioned in Batman Beyond and Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman. After the abduction of Tim Drake by Joker, Batman decided to cut off all his ties with others, including Batgirl. Barbara Gordon gave up her mask and become Commissioner of Gotham while maintaining a professional relationship (only) with Bruce.

2) Harley Quinn and Nightwing

Like we said earlier, it was shocking. The brief stint began after Nightwing followed Harley Quinn into her apartment to investigate about Poison Ivy. The two traded blows, which soon turned into something naughty. While it was not explicitly stated, it is safe to assume that the two had some very good time.

3) Baby Doll and Killer Croc

Love is not reserved for heroes alone. In the episode titled “Love is a Croc”, Baby Doll developed feelings for Killer Croc and freed him from the prison. The two then decide to rob entire city. However, Croc decided to double-cross Doll, a plan which she soon figured out. As revenge, she planned to blow up an entire island along with the two of them. Thankfully, Batman saved the day and Baby Doll (from getting killed by Killer Croc). Yeah, weird.

4) Lois Lane and Batman

The charm if Batman can seduce even Superman’s lady love. In the episode “World’s Finest,” Bruce Wayne arrives in Gotham as a partner of LexCorp, while Batman searches the Joker. But Lois Lane was more than impressed by Bruce Wayne, even wanting to shift to Gotham. It ended after Lois came to know about Bruce’s secret identity. However, in the episode “The Demon Reborn,” Lois admitted to Bruce that she had some regrets about the breakup.

5) Nightwing and Catwoman

If Batman could steal Nightwing’s love, he should be ready for payback. In the episode “You Scratch My Back,” we see a newly-returned Dick Grayson allying with Catwoman. Despite warning from Batgirl and Batman, Nightwing continued his romance with Selina. However, once it is revealed that Catwoman was only using him to steal, Dick gave her a nice thrashing, effectively ending the relationship.
