Upon their return last week, the last episodes of Star Wars Rebels are speeding ahead towards the end of the series, and the latest episode might just be the best so far. “A World Between Worlds,” the second half of the two-part aired last evening, had featured the comeback of two highly loved characters and raised more questions than it answered.
Warning: Star Wars Rebels Spoilers Below:
After Sabine and Ezra discovered that the Empire was trying to decipher paintings on the Jedi temple of Lothal, they teamed up to find a way inside. However, when they were spying on the Imperial stooge in charge of the task, they realize that Emperor Palpatine was following their progress. Ian McDiarmid has voiced the Emperor who demands to know the secrets hidden inside the temple.
Sabine creates a distraction while Ezra enters the temple and finds himself in a huge empty expanse in space where stars twinkled in the distance. That’s when he hears the voices of legendary Star Wars figures, mentioning some of the most crucial lines from the franchise. It also appears that the rules of time and space didn’t apply to this place because we hear Qui-Gon Jinn’s voice and also the voices of Rey and Kylo Ren from the latest trilogy.
Ezra is on his way to other such portals, and also a convor bird whom Ezra recognized from the proximity of Ahsoka Tano. While he is disgruntled and unclear about his purpose in this weird place, the convor beckons him nearer to the portal where he was sitting. As Ezra went closer, he saw Ahsoka battling Darth Vader in the Sith temple on Malachor.
Just when Vader seemed to be ready to kill her, Ezra pulled her through the portal and to safety, bringing to light her fate after that legendary duel.
Yes, Ahsoka survives. She has now traveled across time as well.
By talking to Ahsoka (Ashley Eckstein), and informing her about Kanan’s death, he comes to realize that he can save his master’s life too. He locates a portal where he could see Kanan giving up his life, but, Ahsoka convinced him to let go, reiterating the words that Kanan had said to him. He ultimately resolves to let the past go, realizing Kanan’s sacrifice was crucial for the greater good.
Before they could return, Ezra, going back to the Jedi temple on Lothan and Ahsoka to the Sith temple on Malachor, the Emperor teases them through another portal and tries to use his dark powers to capture them. They somehow escape, and Ahsoka resolves to find Ezra after she comes back from her journey.
It is a matter of speculation whether Emperor or Ahsoka will return to Star Wars Rebels, but, it seems as if they will. It was great fun hearing McDiarmid’s wicked voice of Palpatine once again, and to find out the fate of Ahsoka.
