So whether you love musicals, horror, comedy, Broadway, special effects or puppets (Didn’t we just mean all of you!), this is one thing you can’t miss. This is the first ever big screen release of the original ending of this film. This is what the official press release stated:
“The Most Charismatic Man-Eating Plant in the Galaxy is Back this Halloween as ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ Returns to the Big Screen Two Days Only, October 29 and 31.”
Little Shop of Horrors has been a cult movie, and this is the first ever occasion that we will see it in theaters with the mind-blowing original ending, during this two days in-cinema special event scheduled for October 29 and 31 and organized by Fathom Events and Warner Bros. Apart from the never seen before, digitally remastered 23 minute finale of the 1986 musical, Little Shop of Horrors, which was written by the Oscar winner duo Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, there will also be an exclusive interview with the iconic director of the film, Frank Oz.
The event will be held in almost 500 select movie theaters all over the US through Fathom’s Digital Broadcast Network (DBN). You can check out the list of venues on the Fathom Events website (subject to change). The film was originally released in December 1986 and was the musical adaptation of the 1960 horror comedy by Roger Corman titled Little Shop of Horrors.
The movie stars Rick Moranis in the character of Seymour Krelborn who was an adorable loser who stumbles upon a mysterious plant which he names “Audrey II” after his lady love Audrey (Ellen Greene). His fortune changes dramatically, however, with the passage of time, Audrey II (Levi Stubbs) is revealed to have a penchant for human blood and a desire for power.
The film had got two Academy Awards nominations including the “Mean Green Mother From Outer Space,” which was exclusively written by Ashman and Menken for the movie. The film received a great deal of praise from critics upon its release and went on to become a long term best-seller as a home video. It has developed a cult following over the years, and while its original ending has been available on DVD and Blu-ray, this is the first time that it will be seen by cinema audiences all over the country. This is what Tom Lucas, VP Studio Relations, Fathom Events, had to say:
“This special presentation of Little Shop of Horrors will delight longtime fans and also offer them a new sense of discovery in an ending that the studio and Frank Oz have allowed us to present for the very first time. For fans of movies and musicals, this is truly a cinematic event.”
The Little Shop of Horrors is a fantastic visual treat and has tremendous music by Ashman and Menken who later created iconic musicals such as The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. The film has a stellar support cast which includes Steve Martin, Vincent Gardenia, James Belushi and Bill Murray alongside the trio of Tichina Arnold, Michelle Weeks and Tisha Campbell who played the roles of “Greek Chorus” Crystal, Ronnette and Chiffon.
