Freddy Krugger has been missing ever since the 2010 debacle of A Nightmare on Elm Street reboot starring Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen) in the character of the famous, sweater clad imaginary demon. However, New Line Cinema is planning to make a new Elm Street Film in the future and we wonder who would be ideal for the role of Freddy Krugger? In Robert Englund’s opinion, Kevin Bacon is a great option.

He had played the character in the original Nightmare on Elm Street film and he reprised his role till the 2003 release Freddy vs. Jason. Englund understands the character thoroughly and has a deep emotional bond to it, definitely stronger than anyone else. Therefore, if he selects someone else to do it then it has to be a big thing. Recently during an interview with Cinema Blend, Englund was questioned about his choice of an actor who would play this role in the future film and he clearly mentioned Kevin Bacon as the right guy for the Elm Street reboot. This is what Englund had said.

Well the gossip I’ve heard, and I don’t know how valid this is, but there has been some talk about using, or perhaps he’s been approached, Kevin Bacon. Yeah. I think that would be great. He’s in one of my favorite little horror movies, Stir of Echoes, and you should check it out if you haven’t seen in. And I just think Kevin’s the right size. I think he respects horror movies. He doesn’t make fun of them. I think it would be really interesting.”

Robert Englund is spot on about Stir of Echoes and in case you have missed it so far then we would suggest you go and check it out. More importantly, Kevin Bacon is likely to be a great Freddy Krugger and it is not the only time we have heard of his name for this part. There has been buzz online for a while and last year a fan had recommended Bacon as a great fit for playing Freddy in a new Nightmare on Elm Street film and he keenly agreed, saying, “I like the way you think!”

We don’t find anything wrong with Jackie Earle Haley who at that time seemed to be a fantastic selection for Freddy Krugger, however, his portrayal just failed to click. The problem was more with the terrible film and without a doubt the future film has to have an entirely different tone. Kevin Bacon has the talent to play the serious as well as the fun parts with ease and that’s the kind of mix needed for Freddy. Also, as Robert Englund said, he has the ideal physique.

Robert Englund’s talk with Cinema Blend doesn’t confirm anything as he has nothing to do with production, however, there is no doubt that his opinion matters. At present, David Leslie Johnson (The Conjuring 2) is the guy writing the reboot story, however, the project is progressing slowly. Kevin Bacon is also aging day by day so hopefully Hollywood moves on quickly!
