It seems like Baby Groot is Groot’s son. At the end of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Groot had sacrificed himself to save the team, and it had been a very beautiful moment, but it was one which resulted in the talking tree giving his life. Rocket saved a twig of Groot and then planted the root, and this resulted in the character, Baby Groot. While it has been clear for a while that it is not the same Groot, James Gunn reveals again that Baby Groot is Groot’s son.
James Gunn who has directed Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 engages with his fans on social media and is super excited to answer the questions. Gunn had been pulled into a debate which had pitting Baby Groot against the Porgs from Star Wars: The Last Jedi and then Gunn revealed this:
“First Groot is dead. Baby Groot is his son.”
Gunn had further said, “Yes that’s why he has a different personality,” while he replied to fan. Gunn made it very clear that this is not a carbon copy of the first Groot. Saying that Baby Groot is Groot’s son does add to the whole thing. This is what the director had to say about this before the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
“Although I don’t necessarily think it’s obvious in Vol. 1, it’s important to say that if you exploded and a little glob of you started growing into a baby, I would not assume that baby was you. I do think it’s more obvious in Vol. 2, as Baby Groot has a different personality than Groot, none of his memories, and is much, much dumber.”
This is very interesting as it makes it clear who Baby Groot is. This also means that Groot died in the Guardians of the Galaxy. And this makes James Gunn one of Marvel’s directors to include a few meaningful deaths in the movies that are not the main bad guy. Yondu had a very meaningful one and, as Gunn has said, a permanent death in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The MCU had many deaths that were not really deaths and has not committed to killing a lot of characters over the past few years.
We are poised to see Groot in another form and he will be a teenage Groot in Avengers: Infinity War. This had been first teased in a post-credits scene. A few fans have tried to argue against Gunn on Twitter and but he combatted them at all turns.
