Her original name was Peggy Ann, but her mother changed it to Margaret Ann later. She was the middle child and was raised in a Jewish household. Her mother was an artist, and her father was a lawyer. In her memoir, Breathing Out, Lipton talks about the challenges she faced as a child.

She developed a stutter at the age of 7. Peggy speculated that the condition was probably due to her being sexually abused by a relative. Lipton started as a model at the age of 15. She signed with Eileen Ford’s agency. She moved with her family to California. There, she landed a guest role in Bewitched.

Lipton gained success and new heights. However, she struggled with depression in real life. Lipton settled down with Quincy Jones in 1974. They have two kids – Rashida and Kidada. They broke up in 1986. Lipton died of cancer on May 11, 2019.
