Nichols was born on December 28, 1932, in Robbins, Illinois, Chicago. Her father was a factory worker, town mayor, and chief magistrate named Samuel Earl Nichols and Lishia Parks Nichols. Later, she moved to an apartment in Chicago with her family. She studied in Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York.

Her first appearance was on Kicks and Co., a disreputable musical by Oscar Brown. She also played Hazel Sharpe in a satirical issue of the Playboy magazine. Her performance impressed Hugh Hefner, the publisher of Playboy.
