She was the second of the 4 children. Since childhood, Melissa showed certain artistic qualities and was more interested in dancing rather than acting. This made her learn various dance forms such as tap, ballet, dance and professional roller-skating.

She met Claudio Dabed, a Chilean filmmaker, in Bali and after 2 years of dating, they got married in 2000. They split up some years later, after which, George started dating Jean-David Blanc, a French entrepreneur, from 2011 to 2016. In 2017, George came forward and admitted that her ex, Blanc was abusive to her and convicted him of assault. She has 2 sons with him.

She has played parts in shows like FRIENDS, Monk, Alias and The Amityville Horror. She is critically acclaimed for her role in In Treatment, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination in 2009. In 2008, Melissa became a naturalized American citizen.
