Killer Klowns From Outer Space was a great film and a favorite of a whole generation of kids. There has been talk about its sequel for some years now. However, as things are shaping up, the sequel is unlikely to return to cinemas, but, it is being planned for a TV series adaptation which would be a remake of the original as well as its sequel. The details of the upcoming TV series are given here.
The director and co-writer of the original film, Stephen Chiodo, revealed the plans for the television series in a recent Movie Crypt Podcast:
“Right now, we are currently pursuing a long arch series for cable. We wondered, should we do a sequel to the first one or do we do a remake? We came up with a ‘requel’ – it’s a sequel and a remake. We’ve been developing this for a while. It’s a trilogy in four parts, and it really follows the continuing adventures of new people who are experiencing this phenomenon of a Klown invasion, and once in a while you see some of the old guys pop up and hear their stories – find out what happened over the last 25 years. It’s fucking great.”
This statement doesn’t provide much clarity since he mentioned a long arch cable television series and in the same breath he stated, “trilogy in four parts.” We wonder what does that mean? No doubt there is a good fan base for the cult horror TV segment as proven by the success of Starz’ Ash Vs. Evil. Still, we believe that the best way forward is to create a gory 3D movie sequel. At the same time, the sequel to the film has been in the talks for several years, but, nothing happened, so we don’t yet know if even this thing will get going or not.
In fact, there were rumors in 2011, about the Killer KlownsFrom Outer Space sequel called The Return of the Killer Klowns being made in 3D format. That time the project team had claimed that they have already got the script ready and had got the funds pledged as well and only the distribution channels were being worked out. It was said that the sequel would connect with the original by showing the return of Grant Cramer’s character who will come back to coach two new young characters who will undertake the mission to save the world from the Klowns upon their return.
Cramer had also stated that the plot would show them, “trying to save themselves because the bad stuff the Klowns do at first gets blamed on them.” It was going to be produced by the Chiodo brothers, and Stephen Chiodo was set to occupy the directorial chair again. However, nothing materialized.
The original Killer Klowns From Outer Space released on May 27th, 1988.
