The critics, as well as fans, recite several reasons behind the failure of the New Line Cinema’s 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. However, the commonly agreed premise is that the film flopped because it didn’t feature the legendary Freddy Krueger portrayed by Robert Englund. The audience had been wishing for him to once again reprise his role of the evil guy in the striped sweater, fedora, and razor-glove. However, there is a not so pleasant news on the subject: This will not happen.
Englund was recently interviewed by EW, and he stated that his time as someone who scared teenagers is over and the reason is pretty obvious.
“I’m too old to do another Freddy now. If I do a fight scene now, it’s got to be real minimal because I can’t snap my head for eight different takes and different angles. My spine gets sore,” Englund said. “I can still be mean and scary, but I’m mostly relegated now to sort of Van Helsing roles, old doctors, and shit. So it’s fun that the last moment of me ever playing Freddy is a wink to the audience.”
The reference here was Englund’s final scene in the 2003 film Freddy vs. Jason when we saw Krueger take on the legendary vampire killer from the Friday the 13th series. The audience had the final visual of Englund when Jason was shown carrying Kruegger’s severed head, and he winked indicating that he was beaten but not finished.
So, it is clear now that if the saga moves forward, then someone else will have to play Krueger, but, you can always be surprised by Englund being seen in some Van Helsing type cameo roles.
