There is no dearth of fan theories especially when we talk about Star Wars. However, of late those fans who have time on their hands have been busy trying to decipher the plot of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. This has given birth to a lot of fascinating theories. The latest fan theory claims to have found the ideal father for Rey. As far as timelines and character logic goes, this one is well aimed.
Benicio Del Toro has been cast for Star Wars: The Last Jedi and ever since then he has shied away from discussing his role. We know that he is not allowed to reveal details and there is no word about the character he will portray. However, the actor who claims to be playing a villainous role later stated that his arrival is somewhere in the area between the light and dark side of the force. A Reddit fan has now claimed to have found the answers. The theory proposed hints at Benicio Del Toro playing an older Star Wars Rebel character Ezra Bridger. Besides, the theory suggests that Bridger is Rey’s father. As far as the age and Star Wars Rebels timeline is concerned, and also Del Toro’s age is taken into account, this might be true.
The new theory would link Star Wars Rebels directly to the Star Wars franchise in a manner similar to the Rogue One, but, it exacts a more vital price. This also drops Benicio Del Toro, right in the middle of a fascinating storyline stretching across the entire canon of Star Wars films in an unprecedented manner.
Star Wars Rebels belongs to a time 14 years after Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and it is based five years before A New Hope. The show’s third season is on and Ezra Bridger is playing his part as a Jedi Padawan. The theory implies that Bridger will team up with Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Academy after the happenings of Return of the Jedi. However, he has always been interested in the Dark Side and those are the ideas currently being exploited in Star Wars Rebels. Post his joining Luke, it is believed that he might join an old enemy called Snoke to breach the Jedi and he starts with Kylo Ren.
Recent set leaks suggest that Rey will find out who her father is during a climactic battle with Kylo Ren in The Last Jedi and it would be similar to what took place between Luke and his own father Anakin Skywalker in Return of the Jedi. Now, it is proposed that Bridger will turn out to be Rey’s father.
Luke has figured out Bridger’s identity and he also finds out his plans to join Snoke. He would decide to keep Rey in hiding on Jakku. Bridger and Snoke respond by destroying Skywalker’s Jedi temple, the glimpses of which we say in Rey’s Forceback vision during The Force Awakens.
Taking into account the film and animated TV shows timelines, Bridger must be around 51 when the events of The Last Jedi took place. This matches Del Toro’s own age of 49 at the time he filmed for Star Wars Episode VIII. The age is apt to play Bridger in a live action format.
The fan theory is proposed by someone who goes by the name Darth Hodor and it further suggests that Bridger succeeded in manipulating his daughter just like he did with Kylo Ren before he turned Rey to the dark side to join Snoke. Alongside we see Kylo Ren inching closer to the light side to redeem himself and once again be known as Ben Organa or Ben Solo, whatever you might prefer as none of those is canon yet.
This will ultimately lead to a climactic duel in Star Wars Episode IX to be directed by Colin Trevorrow. All this is mere conjecture though and we are unlikely to elicit any response from either Lucasfilm or Disney about the character of Benicio Del Toro. We will have to keep speculating and making our own guesses until Star Wars: The Last Jedi comes out around Christmas.
