Luke Skywalker, and his severed hand that was chopped off by Darth Vader in their epic lightsaber battle has been a mystery to all Star Wars fans for quite sometime now.
Where did it go? This question has floated through the galaxy and been a source of debate for Star Wars fans for decades now. Well we may have a legitimate answer to the question now.
In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Maz Katana tells Han Solo the reason she has Luke’s iconic blue lightsaber is “a story for another time” And that leaves a lot open for story writers (Hint-Hint) This mystery could be a Star Wars movie in itself…
And now thanks to Industrial Lights & Magic Challenge, an art contest which was sponsored by Lucasfilm – weve got a newer version to the story! And it even aligns with some of the beloved Star Wars books by: Tomothy Zahn!
The winning artist Fred Palacio’s awesome art connects to both the Star Wars:The Force Awakens movie and the 1993 Star Wars novel The last Command.
For the challenge, Art Directors challenged artists to imagine key moments, new vehicle designs, droid designs, new characters and epic battles within the Star Wars Universe. The winners were announced this week, and they produced a ton of new eye-catching Star Wars art that is “Outta the galaxy!” No pun intended…lol
But through it all we love the work of Fred Palacio, whom presented the most intriguing stuff: the journey of Luke Skywalker’s severed hand after Vader sliced it off.
Of course it is all up to interpretation, but the images to me seem to show the hand is several predicaments ..
With the first showing a Boba Fett type image handing the severed hand to the Emperor…
IN the next image it shows an Imperial guard with his lightsaber drawn looking as if to attack the troopers for the hand? What is your take on this piece?
In the book “The Last Command”- a character C’baoth used the genes from Luke’s hand to actually make a clone of Skywalker named “Luuke” (*Clones all got an extra vowel in Star Wars) Luke & the clone Luuke had battled as you see in the next piece. Luuke wielded the old blue lightsaber in the battle and when the real Luke won, he got his old lightsaber back.
This could all have happened, and being that the book took place about 5 years after Return of The Jedi, and The Force Awakens is 30 years later, and the hadn’t bouncing around all over the galaxy. It could have ended up somehow in Maz Katana’s possesion.
But that “Is a story for another time”….
In Palcio’s ;ast image it looks to be Luke looking into some type of clone mold being grown, possibly with himself inside! Man would this make a great movie or what?
With Palacio’s art depicting these amazing stories of Luke Skywalker’s hand after The Empire Strikes Back the possibility of a new Star Wars story about Luke and the missing hand seem exciting, even possibly likely!
