Sony is currently developing a movie version of the Uncharted video game, and they are considering Bryan Cranston for a major role. So far the project has seen several directors (David O. Russell, Neil Burger, and Seth Gordon) and actors (most prominently, Mark Wahlberg) join and then exit it, however, it has not progressed beyond the early pre-production stage. As per the current plans, the Uncharted movie will feature Spider-Man: Homecoming actor Tom Holland to portray the younger Nathan Drake who is a global bounty hunter and lead character in the original Uncharted video games.
The film now has Shawn Levy (Real Steel, Stranger Things) as the director and Holland is himself the person who convinced Sony head Tom Rothman of producing the Uncharted film as the origin story for Nathan Drake. Holland has even recommended actors Chris Pratt and Jake Gyllenhaal as his preferred choices to play the role of Nathan’s mentor and associate Victor “Sully” Sullivan.
As reported by That Hashtag Show, Cranston is in the running for a “large supporting role” in the film that might or might not be Sully. The fact that Cranston is much older than the other two actors suggested by Holland might mean that he is going to be playing some other character which could be an unrevealed villain of the movie.
Cranston is quite accustomed to playing aging mentors in franchise films, and he was seen as Zordon in the reboot of Power Rangers film. Also, he is not in the same age bracket as Sully’s character as suggested by Holland. The mentor of Nathan Drake is supposed to be as strong and physically active as his young protégé which means that the actor suitable for the role has to be closer in age to Holland rather than Cranston.
Taking all things into consideration, we are a great deal excited if Cranston is seen as a much older than anticipated mentor of Nathan or if he displays his acting prowess as the bad guy in the film. The Uncharted is aiming to create an aura similar to the Indiana Jones, and that necessitates the presence of a villain who is nasty, over the top and a little bit crazy. These are the attributes which fall very much within Cranston’s domain.
Holland is going to start filming for the untitled Spider-Man Homecoming sequel by the middle of next year and a scheduled release in summer 2019. At present, he is occupied with another untitled MCU film Avengers 4 which is also set to release in theaters in May 2019.
This indicates that the production of the Uncharted film is likely to start as early as in 2018 so that it can progress in coordination with the busy schedule of the star and also make the best use of the limited time that he can devote to it between the MCU superhero ventures next year. Cranston is likely to be available for filming if he is finalized. Therefore, we have a good chance of receiving confirmation of his association with the Uncharted film in the not so distant future.
As of now, Uncharted doesn’t have any release date scheduled, and we will update you as soon as we get further updates about the film.
