It looks like the Skrulls may be making their theatrical debut in the Fox universe before they appear in the MCU. According to a report by Manabyte, X-Men: Dark Phoenix may show us the Skrulls before they appear in Captain Marvel. They will act as the primary antagonist in this movie, and it is now unknown if they will be featured prominently in the Dark Phoenix.
This would not be the first time that Fox and Disney debuted the same character in the universes. Quicksilver had appeared in both the franchises with Evan Peter’s version making a grand entry in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s version had appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Marvel had surprised many people when it was announced that the Skrulls would take part in the MCU and many fans had assumed that they would be off-limits because of Fox’s ownership of the Fantastic Four rights.
As Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn had clarified that is not the real case. Certain Skrull characters are under Fox’s umbrella, and the Skrulls as a whole are now co-owned by two studios. According to Sophie Turner, Skrulls are the tip of the iceberg:
“We are revolutionizing it. We wanted to create a whole new genre of superhero movie,” Turner told Empire. She also claims the film is a “dark, gritty drama.”
Here is the official description:
“Jean absorbs those solar flares and then hurls them back out into space,” Kinberg explained. “That’s what triggers, awakens, creates this Phoenix force and voice inside her. What appears to the world to be another heroic victory by the X-Men in saving stranded people in space we realize is the thing that begins the unraveling of Jean and the unraveling of secrets Charles told her.”
X-Men: Dark Phoenix will release on November 2, and Captain Marvel will release on March 8, 2019.
