There are many famous couples in Star Wars universe; Leia and Han, Padmé and Anakin, Hera and Kanan, Finn and Poe.
The last one may not be canon, but there are fans who see the writing on the wall. Actor John Boyega, who plays Finn in Star Wars trilogy spoke with Metro on fans wanting to see his character in a relationship with Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron.
“I think that Oscar is always looking at me with love in his eyes, and I guess that the fans saw it. And then they realized that either he needs to chill or come out,” Boyega said.
While Boyega and Isaac support a romance, filmmakers are in charge of this decision. It does not look like Poe and Finn may spend much screen time together in Star Wars: The Last Jedi as they did in the previous movie, but there may be a possibility for a relationship in the future.
Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy had spoken on the possibility in April with E Cartelera and admitted that the storylines will be influenced by fans.
“After 40 years of adventures people have a lot of information and a lot of theories about the paths these stories can take, and sometimes those theories that come up are new ideas for us to listen to, read, and pay attention to,” Kennedy said. “It’s clear that the fans are as many masters of this franchise as we are.”
The Star Wars franchise has yet to feature an LGBTQ relationship on screen, but Boyega knows the importance of representation goes beyond what is featured in movies, diversity matters behind the lens.
“There definitely is that responsibility, but more the responsibility to hire those from those experiences to share their creative light, that’s the pivotal thing,” Boyega said.
“Because if you just hire the same sort of people, you’re just getting the same sort of film. It’s not wrong, but then there’s a lack of variety.”
We will see how Star Wars: The Last Jedi moves the story forward when it premieres December 15.
