Sophie was born in Paris, the second child of Simone, a shop assistant, and Benoît Maupu, a truck driver. Her parents had a break up when she was just nine years old. In February 1980, Marceau came across a model agency looking for teenagers.

She had photos taken at the agency and soon afterward was cast in for Claude Pinoteau’s La Boum in the year 1980. La Boum came out hit with a selling of 4,378,500 tickets in France. Marceau made her singing debut in Dream in Blue in 1981 with French singer François Valéry.

Marceau featured in My Nights Are More Beautiful Than Your Days (1989), directed by Andrzej Zulawski, her longtime boy friend and acted in Pacific Palisades and La note bleue, her third film directed by her companion in the year 1990.

In the year that followed, she ventured into the theatre in Eurydice, which earned Marceau the Moliere Award for Best Female Newcomer. Marceau got international acclaim in 1995 playing the role of Princess Isabelle in Mel Gibson’s Brave heart.

Marceau won 1983 César Award for Most Promising Actress for La Boum 2, in 1988 Cabourg Award for Best Actress for Chouans, in 2000 Cabourg Award for Best Actress for La fidélité, in 2000 GoldeneKamera for Film International, in 2000 Blockbuster Entertainment Award for Favorite Supporting Actress for The World Is Not Enough and many others.

In between 1985 to 2001, Marceau had an affair with director Andrzej Żuławski. Their son Vincent was born in July 1995. In 2001, Marceau left Żuławski and initiated a fresh six-year relationship with producer Jim Lemley. They have a daughter, Juliette.

Marceau also had a romantic relationship with Christopher Lambert beginning in 2007. They announced their separation on 11th July 2014.
