Indian ace tennis player Sania Mirza recently graced the headline of The Indian Express due to her concern towards the problem of tuberculosis in India. She was shocked to find out one person dies of the disease per minute in the country.

Mirza was born on 15th November, 1986, in Mumbai to Hyderabadi Muslim parents. She was raised in Hyderabad in a religious Sunni Muslim family. She began her tennis training at the age of six under Roger Anderson and her father who was a sports journalist. She was schooled in Nas’r and graduated from St. Mary’s College in Hyderabad.

Mirza has won six Grand Slam titles in her career and is a former doubles’ No. 1. She has been ranked as India’s No. 1 tennis player by Women’s Tennis Association. She is one of the highest paid athletes in the country. Her wrist injury caused her to shift focus from playing singles into doubles and mixed doubles.

However, as a singles player, she has registered wins over Vera Zvonareva, Svetlana Kuznetsova, and Marion Bartoli, as well as former world No.1s Martina Hingis, DinaraSafina, and Victoria Azarenka. She has even developed a strong bond with Martina Hingis and their partnership earned Mirza her first Grand Slam in women’s doubles in Australian Open. She has received the Arjuna Award (2004), the Padma Shri (2006) and the Padma Bhushan (2016). She is married to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik and does not have children. Mirza has a net worth of approximately Rs. 170 crores.
