The trailer for The New Mutants came out much earlier than we expected it. Did you ever think about someone making a horror film with some mutant superheroes featuring in it? If yes, then you don’t need to imagine anymore because that’s exactly what director Josh Boone (The Fault In Our Stars) has created by making the X-Men spin-off The New Mutants. The first teaser trailer for the film is out and teases us with something that we have never witnessed in the X-Men universe earlier. In fact, in no superhero film for that matter.
Josh Boone had assured us yesterday that the teaser trailer for The New Mutants would be out at 12.01 a.m. and it was released bang on time. The New Mutants is being teased to be the first ever horror film from Marvel; it seems that the director, as well as Fox, are greatly banking on that angle, a fact that was underscored by their releasing the trailer on Friday the 13th. The day is synonymous with the horror genre, and once we saw the trailer, it was easy to figure out why. The success of Deadpooland Logan has given a lot of heart to Fox, and they are now in the mood to take some risks. Considering the kind of success that IT and some other major horror films have been getting recently, this is a risk worth taking.
In case you are not familiar with it, The New Mutants are some teenage mutants undergoing training which has an overlap with the main X-Men team. They were first seen in Marvel Comics in 1982 and co-created by the legendary Chris Claremont in partnership with Bob McLeod. The film is likely to deviate to some extent from the comic books as is generally the case. However, it might now be a bad thing at all.
The film adaptation of New Mutants revolves around a young mutants group who might be unknown to the casual fans, however, if you are a dedicated Marvel reader then you would recognize as well as want them to be on the big screen. These are the Russian teenager Magik played by Anya Taylor-Joy (Split), Scots girl Wolfsbane played by Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Danielle Moonstar played by Blu Hunt (The Originals), Brazillianladies man Sunspot, played by Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why), Cannonball, played by Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), and Dr. Cecilia Reyes, played by Alice Braga (I am Legend). These are not exactly the mutants that we see in the X-Men universe.
The New Mutants is among three X-Men films that Fox will release in 2018, the other two being Deadpool 2 and X-Men: Dark Phoenix. However, New Mutants will come out first and has a release date of April 13, 2018. It is certain that Deadpool 2, as well as X-Men: Dark Phoenix, will generate tremendous buzz. However, this film has a brand new concept and could be the one that will become the talk of the town next year. Go ahead and check The New Mutants teaser trailer for yourself below:
