Melina Eleni Kanakaredes was conceived in Akron, Ohio, to Connie (Temo), who claimed a sweets organization, and Harry Kanakaredes, a protection sales rep. She is of Greek drop. Her affection for musical theater, mostly crafted by Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera, roused her as a youngster.
