Melina Eleni Kanakaredes was conceived in Akron, Ohio, to Connie (Temo), who claimed a sweets organization, and Harry Kanakaredes, a protection sales rep. She is of Greek drop. Her affection for musical theater, mostly crafted by Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera, roused her as a youngster.
She started performing locally, singing with her sisters, and making her acting introduction at age eight in the network theater creation of ‘Tom Sawyer.’ Kanakaredes went to Ohio State University to contemplate music, move, and theater, later moving to Point Park College in Pittsburgh.
