Star Wars is going stronger than ever, and the franchise will see its much awaited next episode Star Wars: The Last Jedi come out next month. While plans are firmly in place for the next few years of the franchise with Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25, 2018) and Star Wars 9 (December 20, 2019) being all set, but, things are unclear beyond that. Disney’s head Bob Iger had said in March that they plan to keep going with Star Wars films till 2030. Although the CEO didn’t give any details, Kathleen Kennedy has reaffirmed the same in a fresh interview on The Star Wars Show. This is what she said:
“We’re sitting down now, we’re talking about the next ten years of Star Wars stories, and we’re looking at narratively where that might go; future stories beyond Episode 9, with these new characters, Rey, Poe, Finn, BB-8, but we’re also looking at working with people that are interested in coming into the Star Wars world and taking us to places that we haven’t been yet, and that’s exciting too because it’s a vast galaxy far, far away… The possibilities are endless.”
Another March report had claimed that Episode 9 would see the culmination of the Skywalker story, though, there will be Star Wars films annually, but, the next Skywalker trilogy will be a long way off. Although that report remained unsubstantiated, it does sync with another report claiming that all Star Wars films beyond the Episode 9 will be solo spin-offs. It is intriguing that Kathleen Kennedy had named Rey, Poe Dameron, and Finn who are the three main young generation characters of the current trilogy and then there is the buzz about Rey being Luke Skywalker’s daughter.
While everything is mere speculation right now, there are reports of some spin-offs being I the works. A report surfaced in August about Disney and Lucasfilm working on Boba Fett and Yoda spin-offs. Another report claimed that Yoda is going to be made first. It was well circulated that Boba Fett is the spin-off on which Josh Trank was working before he was fired. There has been a lot of talk about an Obi-Wan Kenobi solo too, but, it is all speculation till the time Lucasfilm releases their post-Star Wars 9 plans.
Han Solo’s production was over recently, and J.J. Abrams is directing Star Wars 9. He returns to the franchise in a directorial role after the exit of Colin Trevorrow after he had spent a good bit of time working on the script. There has been controversy regarding the dismissal of Han Solo directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller and also the unexpected firing of Colin Trevorrow. However, nothing diminishes the anticipation about the films. We are waiting to know more about the future of Star Wars universe, and in the meanwhile, you can check out the latest Star Wars Show episode below which shows Kathleen Kennedy’s interview at 2:05 mark (courtesy Star Wars YouTube channel).
