One of the few things we are quite certain about the current Star Wars trilogy is the fact that Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, and Kylo Ren share a bond of family. This bond, if reports are to be believed, will set the major theme in the upcoming films. We already know that a Luke and Ben would have a major confrontation on the cliff where Luke is currently at. Now, the most obvious reason would be that Kylo Ren was sent there to apprehend (or kill Luke) on Snoke’s command. But a prevailing theory suggests that there might be his ulterior motives.
The basis of this theory is the pendant Luke was shown to be wearing. According to many, this pendant contains a piece of Sith kyber crystal from Darth Vader’s lightsaber. Yes, this news is troubling on its own and further strengthens the theory that Luke may well have turned towards the Dark Side. One theory goes as far as to suggest that Luke is the secret master from whom Snoke takes orders.
According to Mike Zeroh, the administrator of the Star Wars YouTube channel:
“The crystal glows on Luke’s neck when in the dark or dim lighting… The necklace appears to be beady and colored black, with two large extensions in the back that combine together. The crystal is able to exit out of the object.
On set over at Pinewood, it was picked up that this was Darth Vader’s kyber crystal fragment – not a full crystal itself.”
The most believable theory is that Kylo Ren’s lightsaber contains only a few pieces of the kyber crystal taken from Vader’s lightsaber. It is incomplete, which is why Kylo is unable to use it properly. For that purpose, he might want to possess the kyber crystal Luke has, to complete both his lightsaber and Darth Vader’s legacy.
Many, like the Star Wars site “The Stupendous Wave,” believe that this is the case. Kylo Ren’s obsession to live up to his grandfather’s legacy would be the biggest push to his character arc.
However, this also means that a family reunion and Ben Solo’s return to the Light might not be the probable turn of events. In all likelihood, what we would see is a showdown between Luke and Kylo, and it is possible that only one might survive.
On the one hand, we would have Kylo, completely immersing himself in the Dark Side. On the other side is Luke, who might have turned towards the Dark Side. So there is no doubt that The Last Jedi would be too damn dark.
