The just concluded 75th annual Golden Globes ceremony was vastly different from any other held previously, and it was primarily due to the sexual misbehavior allegations which have stunned Hollywood late last year and are still casting a dark shadow on the industry. The event witnessed sentimental speeches from various actresses. However, there was only one lady who received several standing ovations and brought the audience to tears. Oprah Winfrey received the honor of being the first black woman to be given the Cecil B. DeMille award on Sunday, and while she was speaking to a crowd full of her colleagues, she might have just declared a 2020 presidential election campaign to the whole world. Her fierce speech instantly led to rumors about the chances of Winfrey becoming the President.
Oprah Winfrey’s acceptance speech including her recollection of the days when she sat on the floor as a child and watched Sidney Poitier be the first black person to receive an Academy award, and later stated that little girls watching from their homes should also accept this prestigious award for the first time. However, Oprah’s speech was primarily centered on the Me Too Movement, and she told the audience that a “new day is on the horizon.” It led to a standing ovation for the impeccable and sincere words which found resonance with women in Hollywood, and she also talked about the media’s importance. This is what Oprah said.
“I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon. And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say ‘Me too’ again.”
Oprah Winfrey has earlier stated in the public that she wasn’t contemplating of running for President in 2020. However, a few people close to her have been contradicting that since her speech last night. Her partner, Stedman Graham said, “It’s up to the people. She would absolutely do it.” Couple of anonymous close friends of Oprah Winfrey spoke to CNN saying that Oprah is considering about it, and it was further proven by her passionate call for change at the Golden Globes.
While her friends said that she is considering about running for the post, they also clarified that Oprah Winfrey hadn’t decided yet. A lot of celebrities sympathetic to the liberals and viewers who saw her talk at Golden Globes, definitely felt that way. That might just have been what Oprah wished for. A section of political strategists had highlighted last year that Oprah Winfrey’s iconic stature and wealth might prove her to be a powerful Democratic candidate. But, it remains to be seen if America would be willing to vote for another TV star to manage the nation.
It’s all speculation right now, but, Oprah Winfrey certainly sounded like a presidential candidate during the 75th Golden Globes. She had earlier campaigned for Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton, remarking that a lady president would bring about a “seminal moment for women.” That wasn’t to be, but, probably Oprah Winfrey might herself be the seminal moment for women in 2020. You can have a look at what Oprah Winfrey said in her Golden Globes speech below and just think about how things would be if she ran for President of the USA in 2020.
