The underproduction Hellboy reboot which features ‘Strangers Things’ actor David Harbour has been traveling on a bumpy track so far. First, it received a great deal of flak when Ed Skrein who is a white actor was cast to play a character that is traditionally of Japanese-American origin. The backlash led to the error being rectified, and now there is another uproar about the film. Hellboy is being filmed inside the Wells Cathedral, and several worshippers are feeling offended about the filming of a demonic guy from Hell or something akin to hell in their church.
The filming is taking place inside the iconic Wells Cathedral in Somerset, England and quite a few people are dismayed with that. However, we don’t know what exactly got them all worked up, but, apparently, locals are not taking it kindly that the film is being shot inside the 900-year-old Cathedral. One lady who resides opposite the church has been quite vocal asking the question if they have “lost sight” of the purpose for which the church was built.
However, the church officials issued a statement, and they are firm with their decision. As reported by BBC News, the officials of the church knew that granting permission for the filming will create some controversy, however, they agreed after they understood the character of Hellboy. This story is a good vs. evil and Hellboy is on the good side, which convinced them to let the film crew enter their premises. While the church has a valid reason, the worshippers are also not wrong. While the church received payment for the filming permission, the amount received has not been declared publicly.
Let’s see if the controversy gains further momentum. However, this is not the only time that the reboot has hit a rough patch. As stated above, the casting of Ed Skrein (Deadpool) as Ben Daimio, a soldier with the power to morph into a humanoid jaguar hybrid.
While Skrein claimed that he had no idea about the originality of the character and who later willingly exited the film, the casting was in the first place quite a bold step. Now Daniel Dae Kim has been cast in that role. He not only thanked Skrein but, also had an in-person meeting with him recently.
The reboot is also titled Hellboy just the way the 2004 film featuring Ron Perlman was. This film is being directed by Neil Marshall. There is not much information on the film’s plot, but, it shows the Hellboy travel to London and take on the Blood Queen in a battle that might spark the end of the world. David Harbour is playing Hellboy, and the other members of the cast are MillaJovovich, Ian McShane, Daniel Dae Kim, Sasha Lane and Penelope Mitchell.
There is no official release date marked for the film, so we will let you know whether it will release next year or in 2019 as soon as the information is available.
