She is a Chinese-born Singaporean actress and holds the unique record of starring in three of the four Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film-nominated Chinese-language films.
She was raised in Jinan, Shandong. She then enrolled herself in the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing, from where she graduated in 1989. While studying there she was noticed by director Zhang Yimou who quite literally changed her fate by making her have a debut in his feature Red Sorghum in 1987.

Her next feature Chen Kaige-directed Oscar-nominated Farewell My Concubine (1993), was also acclaimed and won her the Best Supporting Actress at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards. Her other notable movies include- Breaking the Silence (2000), Zhou Yu’s Train (2003), 2046 (2004), Memoirs of a Geisha (2005), Curse of the Golden Flower (2006), and Coming Home (2014). Her contributions as an actress gave her the honour of becoming the head of jury at the 2000 Berlin Film Festival and the 2002 Venice Film Festival, becoming the first Chinese to hold such a position at both events.

In her career Gong has won many accolades including three Hundred Flowers Awards, two Golden Rooster Awards, and honorary awards at the Berlin and Cannes film festivals. She gained the prestigious Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the government of France in 2010. Gong was previously married to Singaporean tobacco tycoon Ooi Hoe Seong with whom she separated in 2010. She is now married to French musician Jean-Michel Jarre.
