Gene was named after her late uncle. She had an older brother named Howard Sherwood Tierney Jr. and a younger sister named Patricia Tierney. They were of Irish descent from their father’s side. He was a successful insurance broker, and her mother was a physical education instructor. Gene was raised in Westport, Connecticut.
