Had there been a need to choose the best studio to produce a Games of Thrones RPG, then we are pretty sure you would have picked Bethesda (creators of Skyrim and Fallout), but then, perfect things don’t happen. Do they? If a recent report is to be believed, this dream combination of Game of Thrones and Bethesda might just become a reality!
Some extremely attentive fans on NeoGAF recently spotted a Target listing called “Bethesda: Game of Thrones.” We have no clue as to what was this product, and we can’t even say if it is a video game, but, the name suggests it is. The fact that there is no update about any such thing in the offing suggests that it might just be a mistake, although a very well defined one. In fact, this might just be the handiwork of a Game of Thrones lover who works at Target.
Since the Game of Thrones Season 7 is coming to an end tonight, this might just be a precursor to an upcoming announcement.
What will be interesting is to know that if a Game of Thrones game is indeed in the works at Bethesda then what kind of shape will the game take. Is it Bethesda’s main RPG studio that’s working on the game? There has been no news of a follow-up ever since Skyrim came out of Bethesda stable six years ago. Does it mean that they have spent last five years working on a Game of Thrones title? To their credit, nobody has got a wind till now about such a thing existing.
In the years gone by, we have witnessed many Game of Thrones video games including two RPGs which came out in 2011 and 2012, one mobile based strategy game and Telltale’s episode format series. However, we haven’t yet seen a single game that did justice to the epic status of the series. The initial RPGs and the strategy game were extremely lackluster and lousy while the Telltale’s series was entertaining, but, didn’t bring forward the vast potential of Westeros.
If a Bethesda Game of Thrones RPG comes out then it would be a great surprise, but, as of now, we should rein in our horses and at best only hope for this leak to mean more than just a prank or a mistake.
The final episode of Game of Thrones Season 7 will be aired on HBO tonight at 9 pm Eastern Time.
