Andy Muschietti’s IT is creating powerful shock waves that are likely to infuse fresh spirits into the horror movie genre. We saw how last Februrary, Paramount Pictures inexplicably scrapped their Friday the 13th Reboot project barely months before it went into production. This now means that they have lost out on it and the franchise will move over to Warner Bros. & New Line in 2018. Thus, it comes home to the studios which are basking in the blockbuster IT.
The word is already out about the wheels being set in motion on a new Friday the 13th Reboot that will release on November 13th 2020 and will also mark the 40th anniversary of the 1980 film Friday the 13th which was directed by Sean S. Cunningham.
The way things are shaping up, it seems as if WB/New Line had the best of both worlds as they had the 5 year swap deal which had them give up rights to Friday the 13th in exchange for a slice of Interstellar. While Paramount couldn’t produce a reboot in the five years of time that they had Friday the 13th with them, WB/New Line are already on their mark to launch the film as soon as they regain the rights in 2018. We don’t have any clue as to whether Platinum Dunes will be associated with the project, but, by the look of things, neither they nor Paramount is likely to get any part to play in the film.
While there is still many months to go in between, we are definitely in with great chances of seeing the revival of a great horror film. Warner Bros. & New Line also have the rights to A Nightmare on Elm Street which means that they have tremendous chances of encashing the newly revived horror wave.
