She has Dutch and Welsh descent. At 17, Carol enrolled at Sidney Sussex College to study engineering in 1978.

Initially, Carol began to work as a junior civil engineer at Dinorwig Power Station. She was a backing singer with her friend in the pop group Dawn Chorus. The group recorded various songs. From 1984-85, Carol appeared in the Peter Levy show.
