Diversity does continue to be a big topic in the geek culture, as more fans of comic book superheroes push to see more of their heroes of genders, colors, and sexualities. The Spider-Man franchise has now invited debate on this topic.
There have been a few discussions online on if there should be a transgender version of Peter Parker (Spider-Man). While fans had a range of opinions, there was a lot of support for this idea from a noteworthy source: the stars of Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Actors, Jacob Batalon and Laura Harrier, played Peter Parker’s friend, Ned and his love interest, Liz, respectively, in Spider-Man: Homecoming; when they took to Tumblr for “#answertime” with their fans, they got a question: “What are your thoughts on trans boy Peter Parker?”
The actors responded with an answer: “YAAAAAAAAAAAAASS.”
The issue of gender and/or sexual identity has become prominent over the last few years, with comic books introducing some gay or bisexual characters into the mythos (Iceman, Batwoman, Green Lantern, Northstar, Catwoman, etc.). That said, the “T” portion of LGBTQ is scarce in the comic book medium.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is available on Digital HD. The Marvel Studios movie will release on Blu-ray and DVD on October 17th.
