Wendy grew up in Seoul’s Seongbuk District and was living in Jecheon with her family until her 5th year of elementary school after which, she and her older sister moved to Canada. She lived in Brockville, Ontario for some time before moving to the United States.

She attended the Shattuck-Saint Mary’s in Minnesota and was an honor student with several accolades to her name in extracurriculars like music, sports, and academics. It was in the United States that she started going by the name Wendy. Soon after, she moved back to Canada and attended the Richmond Hill High School.

By this time Wendy had become fluent in English and had picked up some Spanish and French. Wendy comes from a family of music lovers and was, naturally, inculcated with the same love. She not only learned how to sing but could play different instruments like the piano, flute, saxophone, and the guitar.

However, she received some objections from her parents for wanting to pursue a career in music since she was a bright student and wanted her to focus on academics. Eventually, they relented and allowed her to audition in South Korea to become a singer.

Wendy entered Koreaboo’s Global Audition in 2011 with Cube Entertainment and was one of the 15 finalists to have been handpicked by Koreaboo and singer G.NA out of 5,000 entries and was selected to participate in the final round in Vancouver, Canada.

Wendy was cast by chance by SM Entertainment when she was accompanying her friend to the 2012 S.M. Global Audition being held in Canada. She sang ‘Moon of Seoul’ by Kim Gun-Mo and passed the audition and became a trainee under SM Entertainment. Within 2 years of training, she was introduced on 14th March 2014 to SM’s debut group called SM Rookies.

When in SM Rookies, Wendy released the song Because I Love You and featured it in its music video. She made her official debut with 4 other members on August 1, 2014, in a group named Red Velvet which went on to become one of the most prominent female Kpop groups of the 3rd generation of kpop.

Besides her activities in the group, Wendy was a panelist on the show We Got Married and participated in a music show called King of Mask Singer. She collaborated with singer Eric Nam to release a duet Spring Love in 2016. Wendy is also credited with a host of osts to her name.

Her first EP as a solo artist Like Water was released in 2021 and was revealed as a member of a supergroup, alongside bandmate Seulgi, ‘Got The Beat’ making their debut in January 3rd, 2022. As of 2021, Wendy is a presenter for Pond’s.
