The upcoming Terminator 6 is all set to bring back the old cast. It is more of a sequel than a reboot which is being produced by the original creator/director James Cameron. The movie has Arnold Schwarzenegger once again doing the titular role as the guy who was the inspiration behind the T-800 cyborg. Recently confirmation came about the original Terminator actress Linda Hamilton joining the team to reprise her character of Sarah Connor once again. This is a reunion that took 25 years coming.
Linda had played a role in the original Terminator directed by James Cameron who had released in 1984. After that, she once again played Sarah Connor in Terminator 2: Judgement Day which had released in 1991 and had a recent re-run in cinemas after getting a 3D touch. Terminator 6 will be released in theaters by Skydance and Paramount.
Linda Hamilton’s return to the franchise was confirmed by James Cameron at a private event organized to celebrate the Terminator franchise. This is what Cameron said:
“As meaningful as she was to gender and action stars everywhere back then, it’s going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she’s become return.”
The return of Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor in the film after we had seen a younger Sarah Connor played by Emilia Clarke in the 2015 release Terminator Genisys, means James Cameron is aiming to deliver a message about gender characters in the action movies. As of now, Cameron is busy with Avatar 2. Therefore, he will only produce the Terminator 6. He gave an idea about what his creative thoughts are.
“There are 50-year-old, 60-year-old guys out there killing bad guys, but there isn’t an example of that for women.”
Terminator 6 will be directed by Tim Miller (Deadpool) who will be creating the latest chapter of this long time fabled franchise. This is his second directorial venture and the first association of James Cameron with a Terminator movie since the Terminator 2 of 1991. He is co-producing the film alongside Skydance. Paramount is going to distribute the film in US markets, and Fox will manage the overseas distribution. The story is going to be an original Cameron concept, and he is working out on the script with Miller.
This film is going to be the first segment of a brand new trilogy which will have three standalone movies which will have only limited interlinked narrative regarding the characters. Arnold will be joined by David Goyer who has previously been known for his work in The Dark Knight films of Christopher Nolan, Charles Eglee who had created Dark Angels alongside James Cameron and Josh Friedman, the creator of The Sarah Connor Chronicles TV show.
Arnold is going to play the role of the person who inspired T-800 terminator. He has been the only factor which unites all the Terminator films while Linda Hamilton and James Cameron were not associated with the 2003, 2009 and 2015 chapters.
The word about Schwarzenegger being the guy who was the inspiration behind the T-800 terminator cyborg came from James Cameron himself, but, there are no further revelations about the storyline. The film is likely to follow the Terminator 2: Judgement Day events, and there will be a lot of evil technical advancements on display.
Along side the iconic characters making a comeback, James Cameron also intends to introduce a new set of characters which will take guard from the oldies, just the way things happened with Star Wars: The Force Awakens which also saw a mixed cast. He said:
“We’re starting a search for an 18-something woman to be the new centerpiece of the new story. We still fold time. We will have characters from the future and the present. There will be mostly new characters, but we’ll have Arnold and Linda’s characters to anchor it.”
There is no clue as to how they plan to link the other films to this new storyline and we don’t even know if they are simply doing away with the timeline and writing a new saga altogether. There hasn’t been any mention of Ed Furlong or Robert Patrick making a comeback either. The shooting schedule is not yet announced, but, ideally, cameras will start rolling sometime in 2018, and you can expect to watch the film in the theaters in 2019.
