Back in 2011, WB had a vision of Green Lantern being the foundation for a new franchise bolstered by an animated TV series, a video game, and a related merchandise line. The plans didn’t realize because the film turned out to be a critical and commercial failure and the studio canceled the plans about sequels as well as the cartoon series.
However, the scenario is different after six years and Green Lanterns are now a part of DCEU, and there was a glimpse in Justice League. Now there is the Green Lantern Corps film under development (a reboot and not a sequel). All this makes Green Lantern co-writer Michael Green wish for another attempt at the concept.
“I feel like my experience on Green Lantern is very much unfinished and there are stories to tell there,” Green, who has been associated with Logan, Blade Runner 2049 and American Gods, talked to Yahoo! Movies. “That was not a film that turned out the way we’d hoped going in, and I think there is an appetite for a better version of that.”
Green also shared his idea of who would be the ideal Green Lantern, the hero of his ongoing Starz drama American Gods, which is an adaptation of the best-selling fantasy novel by Neil Gaiman.
“I’ll probably get angry texts if I don’t say what’s in my heart,” he said, “which is that Ricky Whittle would make a fantastic John Stewart.”
While Tyrese Gibson has been trying to get exactly that role in Green Lantern Corps and claims having met WB executives, there is no hint about the role having anyone cast yet.
Green Lantern Corps is written by the duo of David S. Goyer and Justin Rhodes. The film is supposed to feature an older Hal Jordan mentoring the younger John Stewart. The film which is scheduled to release in 2020 is likely to be directed by Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), and it is being called “Lethal Weapon in space.”
