Marvel Comics has indicated that the next Spidey event will witness the debut of a new villain called Red Goblin. Dan Slott became the sole writer of The Amazing Spider-Man in 2010 and ever since we have seen him guide the Spider-Man through various events such as “Spider-Island” and “Spider-Verse.” Slott has for a long time been associated on a narrative based on Normal Osborn whom Spider-Man fans know better as the Green Goblin. While Osborn’s powers have been taken away from him, his hatred for the Spider-Man is intact.
Marvel has now disclosed that the “final battle” between the web-slinger and the Green Goblin will start in March next year. What’s more fascinating is that the battle will be the debut of a new Goblin: The Red Goblin.
Have a look at the initial teaser and image of this upcoming Marvel Comics bad guy in the trailer shown here:
It is an interesting image, not just because he appears to be a supernatural. You can spot the demonic tail and the flaming energy around the Goblin’s mouth.
- More importantly, we had learned in The Amazing Spider-Man #32that Norman Osborn was focusing on mystic arts. The comic drew parallels to Doctor Strange. Osborn searched for a mentor in the Himalayas and looked into a mystic object called Emerald Oracle of Ikkon, and it showed him a future where he was a mighty sorcerer. It is obvious that the vision indicated that he would be able to wield his powers to serve his evil purposes and thus, the monks denied him. They also told him that they would warn all other orders so that Norman Osborn doesn’t get any training in dark arts.
However, Osborn is not the sort of guy who would accept being rejected. He continued on his mission to acquire mystical power, and he even tried breaking into the Sanctum Sanctorum of Doctor Strange. Now that the Red Goblin has a demon-like look, it appears as if he did manage to discover some source of mystic power that also provided him with an evil ally.
The Red Goblin’s appearance has an uncanny resemblance to Mephisto, one of the most famous Hell Lords of Marvel. While Mephisto has not been typically a part of the Spider-Man, things had been different in 2007’s comics “One More Day.” This arc featured Spider-Man make a deal with the Devil. It was a deal wherein Mephisto saved Aunt May’s life, and in return, he wiped Spider-Man’s marriage to Mary-Jane out. Norman Osborn has repeatedly found out the deepest, darkest secrets of Spidey. By delving into the mystic arts, he would be able to find out this one for sure.
As of now, we can only take a guess. What we are certain about is that the Red Goblin surely looks like a demon resembling Mephisto. That is also a great indication that Osborn has stumbled upon a deadly ally during his quest to master mystic powers. If that turns out to be true, then Spider-Man might be facing the most dangerous enemy ever.
