Patricia Heaton was born and raised in Bay Village, Ohio. She was born to Patricia (née Hurd) and Chuck Heaton, who was a sportswriter for The Plain Dealer. She lost her mother at a very young age to an aneurysm. She was raised in a large family of five children.

After completing High School, she enrolled herself at Ohio Wesleyan University. There, she joined Delta Gamma Sorority. She entered acting by appearing in a recurring role on the ABC drama Thirtysomething.
