Imagine the blended sounds of heavy metal, the throbbing of motors, booming explosions and rattle of automatic guns, all the elements that made Mad Max: Fury Road such a standout roller coaster of a movie encapsulated in the Twisted Metal Universe. Well, that almost came to be a reality as per Brian Taylor who is the co-director of Crank and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and the film also almost featured Nicolas Cage.
“It was kind of like Fury Road before Fury Road in a way,” Taylor recently stated in an interview with Collider. “The set pieces in Twisted Metal were kind of the same thing.”
He revealed that the plot was so crazy that Sony couldn’t bet the money on it. The timing was also all wrong as The Twisted Metal IP was on the downslide after its latest game had tanked commercially.
“It became like a ‘tweener,” he said. “Sony came out with a new version of the game, didn’t really sell that well… It was a movie that felt like it needed to be $50 million, but they didn’t feel that the fanbase really merited that kind of movie; it really wanted to be more of a $15 million movie, but the nature of it with the set pieces would’ve just made it too big.”
Nicolas Cage As Sweet Tooth
The big draw of the idea was to feature Nicolas Cage as the frightening mascot of the Twisted Metal, Sweet tooth. “By the way,” he said, “I wanted Nic Cage to be Sweet Tooth… Even Sweet Tooth is kind of like the Fury Road guy, you know it’s the mask and the clown with the crazy car. It kind of feels the same.“
Unfortunately, it just could not be done. “It’s not worth doing it unless you can really push the envelope and do destruction people haven’t seen before. So I don’t know,” Taylor finished, “it’s sort of in movie purgatory, but I tell ya it’s cool.”
Dear Sony, in case you come across this interview, just think about the excitement that such a movie will create among the fans. Nowadays, gaming is not a child’s play with the average age of a gamer being 35 that means he will be able to connect with the Twisted Metal series and you have got a potential winner over there.
