Miranda Otto was born on December 15, 1967, in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. She was, however, raised in Newcastle.
Her parents got divorced when she was six years old. After that, she lived in Hong Kong while visiting her father in Sydney during the weekends and the holidays. Otto, during her childhood, wrote scripts along with her friends. She also appeared in several dramas at the Nimrod Theatre.

As a kid, Otto wanted to become a ballerina but had to abandon her dream when diagnosed with moderate scoliosis. She graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney.
