Writer and director, James Gunn is helping in planning out the long-term future on the cosmic side of the MCU. He is also directing Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and he is the executive producer of Avengers: Infinity War.

And yes, he and the Marvel Studios are considering the introduction of the “real” Nova, Richard Rider.

This is a nod to Marvel Comics’ character, Sam Alexander as a fan asked him during a live Facebook Q&A which was hosted by James Gunn.

“Yes, definitely. Nova comes up occasionally as someone we might use. One of the things I’m doing with creating Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – that will take place after the next two Avengers movies – and it will help to setup the next 10-20 years of Marvel movies. It’s going to really expand the cosmic universe. We’re going to be setting up new characters. It will be the last movie of this version of Guardians of the Galaxy.”

Sam, now a younger and newer Nova, was not really as well received as Rider when the comic series was rebooted. The original Richard Rider Nova had returned and the pair had teamed up. The Nova adventures arguably always come from Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning’s genius and marvelous run of stories during 2006-2011. These featured a mature Nova Prime who served as the last surviving member of the faction. Their work re-launched the Guardians of the Galaxy as we know them today and served as a huge inspiration for James Gunn’ GOG movies.

The team even did the official tie-in comic for the very first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. They may get chance to do something similar in the future but that is only if Nova gets his solo film. Nova was introduced in the first GOG movie as a police force who protected Xanda. Their primary members were played by Glenn Close, Peter Serafinowicz and John C. This take on Nova Corps has treated the membership as pilots and guards, despite being from a planet, getting out of an intergalactic war.

In the comic, Nova members are powered protectors of the galaxy. They do a lot more than fly their ships that make energy webs.

How the studio addresses the discrepancy between what has been shown in MCU with what is in the comics still remains to be seen by the fans.

The Nova Corps we saw was only a fraction of the entire organization. After their failure to stop one, the Dark Aster from entering the atmosphere of their capital city, perhaps it is time to start investing in something a bit more powerful. They could maybe even develop the Worldmind which is the source and database of Nova Corps power and knowledge.

We urge you to read Annihilation and then go on to Annihilation: Conquest. Oh yes, and also follow DnS’s Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy series.

You are welcome.
