The Princess was born on 22nd September 1971 in Oslo’s National Hospital in Norway. Born to Crown Prince Herald and Crown Princess Sonja, Princess Märtha is the only daughter of the Royal couple.
She was named in honor of her later grandmother and great-great-grandmother on her father’s side. According to the Salic Law, until 1990, Princess Märtha was not in line to inherit the throne as only a male heir could be the legitimate successor to the King. Things changed after a constitutional amendment in 1990.

The amendment granted the eldest child, regardless of gender, to inherit the throne. This applied to all those born after 1990. While Princess Märtha was also included in the line to inherit the throne, she was placed behind her brothers (even her youngest brother) to be the fourth in line to inherit instead of being the third.

While being a professional physiotherapist, the Princess’s interest in music and attachment to Norwegian folklore-inspired her to start her own business that centered itself on the public and televised performances of folk tales and Norwegian choirs.

In 2002, she started her own company that would grant her greater freedom to work beyond her constitutional tasks as a Princess. The Princess was a part of the Oslo Gospel Choir’s Christmas concert in 2003.

After establishing her company, Princess Märtha started paying income tax, and the King, post consultation with her, furnished a royal edict that removed the Princess’s style of Royal Highness.

In spite of this Princess Märtha retains her position in the line to ascend the throne and occasionally carries out duties on behalf of His Royal Highness, the King. She has occasionally received criticism for exploiting her royal title for commercial benefit.

In 2019, a court passed an order that she would not be using the title of Princess when she was practicing clairvoyant. She moved to New York in 2004 with her then-husband Ari Behn and expanded her business further. She is currently engaged to American businessman DurekVerrett.
