Nintendo has recently revealed that Mario is no longer a plumber. The character’s profile on Nintendo’s official website states that Mario only used to be a plumber:
“Whether it’s tennis or baseball, soccer or car racing, he [Mario] does everything cool. As a matter of fact, he also seems to have worked as a plumber a long time ago…”
The website features profiles of other characters in the Super Mario Bros. game series like Luigi, Rosetta, Bowser Jr., Princess Peach, Daisy, Wario, Waluigi, Bowser, Toad, Yoshi, Boo, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong.
When Mario was introduced in the 1981 Donkey Kong arcade game, he was known as Jumpman. The video game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto said that he was a carpenter as the game was on a construction site.
Mario Bros. introduced his brother Luigi in 1983, and it took place underground. There was a concept of warp pipes, and so Nintendo played the theme and made characters plumbers instead. Mario was depicted as a plumber in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show.
In history, Mario has been a construction worker, race car driver, chef, pilot, archaeologist, toy maker, referee, doctor, a street dancer, theme park owner and Olympic athlete. If he is no longer a plumber, it is likely that should be fine out there on the open market.
