Avengers: Infinity War’s trailer came out a short while back, and it confirmed that Loki had stolen the Tesseract which contained the Space Stone in Thor: Ragnarok. Throughout the years, the adopted son of Odin has repeatedly shown that there are no limits for him to try and accomplish his personal ambitions. We saw how he wreaked havoc in the original Avengers movie when he led a Chitauri army to win the world. He pretended to die in Thor: The Dark World and then forced his father out of Asgard to pretend being the ruler of the planet which led to Hela’s devastating reappearance and stay assured that his brother would have dozens of other stories of Loki’s backstabbing. Despite that, we keep giving him the benefit of the doubt that maybe now he will give up being the cosmic con-man.
Despite his uncertain nature, Loki is a wild element rather than a proper villain. He has terrible moments and often leads to crisis. However, since we understand what motivates him, having lived throughout his life under the shadow of his powerful brother and the many times when he really sided with the truth, we can’t be harsh with him. Although, his latest trick might just push him over to the dark side taking into account the catastrophic events that his actions would lead to.
The hint about Loki getting hold of the Tesseract during the time when he went to Odin’s vault to get Surtur’s head to complete the Ragnarok prophecy during Thor 3, fans were unsure about Loki stealing the Tesseract. The doubt is clear now, and we saw Loki hold the magical cube in the Infinity War trailer. His backstabbing doesn’t end with that. It seemed as if he offered the Tesseract to someone, most likely Thanos, which will give him the power to emerge from a wormhole to hunt the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. It is also possible that Loki might not have any other option, but, to give the Tesseract to the Mad Titan.
It is logical that Loki carried Tesseract along with him. Asgard has been ruined, and it won’t be sensible that a major story remains buried in the ruins of Thor’s home planet especially now when we are not aware of the location of the sixth and last Infinity Stone – the Soul Stone.
It is not clear if Loki would yet again redeem himself from his latest mischief or not. But, we know that he has been connected to Thanos from the days of the first Avengers, though, we don’t know how this connection was established or whether they are still connected. The Mad Titan can’t be delighted with Loki after he failed to carry out his mission. However, as stated earlier, it is a possibility that Loki might have stolen the Tesseract without any plans of handing it over to the villain. It might just be a tricky corner that he was pushed into and he had no choice, but, to do so.
Counting the Infinity Stones seen in the Avengers: Infinity War trailer, Thanos had two stones placed in the Gauntlet – the Space and Power Stone (from Guardians of the Galaxy). We also saw the Mind Stone being forced out of Vision’s forehead. Thus, the villain has three out of the six stones that he is chasing to fulfill his plans of reshaping the universe.
