She was adopted and raised in the Chicago area. After completing her high school she enrolled in Oberlin College in 1990. It is then that she started to seriously pursue music.
She moved to California but then returned to Chicago where she began to make self produced cassettes. Her tapes led to her getting noticed and garnered her a contract with the independent record label Matador Records. After this she began working on her debut album titled Exile in Guyville, which she released in 1993.

After 4 years she came up with her third album, Whitechocolatespaceegg (1998). Ten years after her debut she released her fourth album Liz Phair (2003), released on Capitol Records. In this album she made a change towards pop rock and gained a certain amount of mainstream audience.

She left Capitol Records after her fifth album and released her sixth album independently. As of now she has sold over three million records worldwide. In 1994 it was reported that she had begun dating film editor Jim Staskauskas. They got married after a year and share a son. She will soon release her own books.
