HBO’s Game of Thrones is filming their eighth and final season, and while this season is set to last only six episodes, they are rumored to be feature-length and the production on the episodes is expected to last longer than a traditional season. Last season had marked the return of many characters who had been missing from the show, like Gendry (Joe Dempsie) and Benjen Stark (Joseph Mawle), and it also seems that a character from the first season may return too. Jason Momoa, who had played Khal Drogo, the Dothraki leader and husband to Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) in the first season had posted a photo on social media from Belfast, with the current GoT star Kristofer Hivju, which has many fans wondering if Khal Drogo may return in the final season. Here is what Jason Momoa had to say about the short trip to Belfast.
“Unite the clans. 24hrs in Belfast GOT Super honored to once apart of this show. I love seeing all my friends and new ones @khivju your a f—ing legend Mad crazy love to Dan and David and Every one i saw i know u just started good luck with filming the greatest show in history have fun Aloha Drogo.”
The actor does not mention being in Belfast to film any scene for the Game of Thrones final season, and it seems likely that he is in Belfast as part of the Justice League promotional tour. Over the past few days, the actor had shared a photo with the “Mother of Dragons,” his former co-star, Emilia Clarke, with another where he is seen with Emilia Clarke and the Justice League hero, Gal Gadot. Here is what Jason Momoa had to say in his caption for this photo:
“Crazy mad insane LOVE for this queen it’s truly like bubbles of giggles are in our bellies when we are together. It’s a shame we don’t get to see each other as much as we would like but when we do i feel like a f—ing KHAL love u @emilia_clarke always forever Yer Jalan Atthirari Anni #getreadyhereicome #GOTohana #slaps mahalo @bullchinashope1_ for always taking care of me @cristian.bullinachinashop you make it a home away from home brother. Aloha Drogo.”
As unlikely as Khal Drogo’s return may be, there is a precedent that is laid forth in the show and the Game of Thrones books. Khal Drogo had been killed by a witch, Mirri Maz Duur (Mia Soteriou), who had poisoned the Khal as revenge for the Dothraki sacking her village. When Daenerys pleads for her to save him, she does so, but the ritual that “saved” his life had put him in a vegetative state, with the ritual drawing its power from the death of Drogo’s horse and the death of Dany and Drogo’s son Rhaego, who was still-born. Mirri Maz Duur had stated that Khal will return as his true self, “When the sun rises in the West, sets in the East. When the seas go dry. When the mountains blow in the wind like leaves.”
Although, in the book, there was a part of the prophecy, which claims that Khal will return, “When your womb quickens again, and you bear a living child. Then he will return, and not before.”
This information, paired with Jon Snow telling Daenerys that the witch “may not have been a reliable source of information,” regarding her inability to bear a child may lead to Khal Drogo’s return, if Jon and Daenerys’ tryst in the finale leads to her having a child. There is no confirmation that Jason Momoa will be back but until we find out more information, you can take a look these photos from Jason Momoa’s Instagram.
