Later, she attended the Professional Children’s School in New York during her ninth grade. However, she dropped out and later earned a GED certificate. Malone also has a half-sister named Madison Mae Malone.

Malone started acting professionally by doing a role in Bastard Out of Carolina in 1996. She won many awards for the movie. After that, she landed many projects such as Donnie Darko, alongside Jake Gyllenhaal, American Girl, The Ruins, Hatfields and McCoys, Lonely Hunter, and the role of Lydia in Pride & Prejudice.
