After his defeat to Bray Wyatt on RAW, there was a moment when Matt Hardy appeared dislocated, enlightened, shaken and fragmented. However, nobody was certain if he was really ‘Broken.’ However, it is the first time since his WWE comeback at WrestleMania 33 that Matt Hardy can officially be ‘Broken.’
Impact Wrestling is owned by Anthem Sports and Entertainment, and they issued a statement to Sports Illustrated today declaring that they would let Hardy to use the iconic character.
“We have seen the character development and will be interested to see where they take the concept. Our new talent agreements all incorporate language that allows talent to continue to use their IMPACT persona after they leave the company. We are working with our legal team to amend our existing agreements to extend this to all of our current and former talents.”
Before now, Anthem was unmoved about their stand against Hardy using the character. Honestly, with the passage of time, it appeared to be a cult classic property of Broken Matt and Brother Nero, and it appeared as if that will be remembered as the last good thing that was ever done by TNA. Although, that might still be true, but, at least we can now anticipate the revival of these two characters in WWE.
Although, it won’t be shocking if WWE modified the Broken brothers to some extent. WWE has a tendency to polish or rebrand almost all their acquisitions. Therefore, despite them acting Broken, WWE might name them something similar (Hardy has been using #WOKEN already). However, then again we have seen AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, Shinsuke Nakamura, and Bobby Roode all retain their titles form the earlier employers. Therefore, we need to wait and watch.
More than anything else, this must be a moment of emotional cleansing for the Hardy clan. It is appreciable that they relentlessly tried to keep their Broken dreams going. Even on WWE television, Matt appeared to follow the line that was legally permissible only to keep his existence relevant to the world of wrestling. Their commitment has paid off, and we hope to see the unforgettable characters dominate to their best in WWE.
