Cameron Monaghan has recently confirmed that his character, Jerome will soon be returning to Gotham. Since the start of this series, Gotham has had lots of Easter eggs for the Joker. Given the show’s focus on the origins of Batman’s foes, it makes sense, but it served to tease the audience without any payoff. All the ‘HAHAHA’ graffiti and incorporeal laughter gave way to Jerome Valeska, and Gotham‘s Joker was born.
Though fans have been told that Jerome is not the Joker, he seems like the closest thing that Gotham can get. His sociopathic behavior and penchant for theatricality have made him the perfect proxy for our Clown Prince of Crime. Although the initial reception was a little mixed, fans have come to love what Monaghan has done with this character across the scattered appearances. Jerome may not be a full-time villain, but that does not mean that he will not continue to terrorize Gotham in the future.
Sean Pertwee, who plays Alfred and Cameron Monaghan had sent out tweets confirming the return of Jerome in the upcoming episode of Gotham.
Gotham will continue its hunt for Professor Pyg while pushing Bruce into the darkness. Next week looks to be the midseason break, considering how Gotham premiered over the fall. It may not be until the spring premiere of this show that Jerome returns.
In his last appearance, Jerome was face to face with Bruce. The marked the highlight of Monaghan’s time as Jerome and connected him with his potential future foe. Gotham season 4 began with Bruce stepping up as a vigilante, but he is yet to take on any of the city’s greatest foes. Scarecrow had been teased as a potential adversary, but he disappeared before Bruce hung up the mask.
Michael Cerveris is filling Gotham‘s depravity with his villainous turn as Professor Pyg. Hopefully, he will not be dispatched, and he and Jerome can square off in a future episode.
Gotham continues Thursday, November 16 with ‘A Dark Knight: Let Them Eat Pie’ on FOX.
