Henry Cavill is now contracted to play the role of Superman yet another time following his appearance as the Man of Steel in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. It is not clear if Cavill’s fourth appearance as Kal-El will take place in a DC team-up adventure or a stand-alone Superman movie, but the actor has recently expressed hope that it will be in the latter.

Cavill had played the Kryptonian in Snyder’s reboot of the Superman movie franchise, Man of Steel in 2013. The actor went on to reprise his role in 2016’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, in which Kal-El met his fate at the hands of Doomsday. Superman returns to the land earth in Justice League, though the discussion around his return is focused as much on Cavill’s CGI-erased mustache in the movie as the movie’s portrayal of a reborn Superman.

Speaking with the LA Times, Cavill had confirmed that he is under a contract to play Superman one more time in DCU or DCEU after Justice League. He expressed his hope that his next appearance will come as a Superman solo movie that will build on the character’s figurative rebirth during the events of Snyder’s movie:

“There’s a wonderful opportunity to tell the Superman story. Now there is a fantastic chance to show Superman in his full colors and tell a very complex, character-driven movie that is based on the story and have that wonderful sensation of hope and happiness. A feel-good movie with lessons laced in there as well.”

Kick-Ass and Kingsman director, Matthew Vaughn has been in talks to helm a stand-alone Superman movie with Cavill and has said that if he were to sign this project, it would put a “feel-good, heroic” spin on the movie.

Now that Justice League has debuted to mixed-to-negative reviews and the worst domestic opening weekend for a DCEU movie as of now, the future of the franchise is in the air. One route forward for DC and Warner Bros. Pictures may be to focus on stand-alone superhero movies. This will allow DCEU to build on the goodwill that it has generated by Cavill’s performance in Justice League.

DC film producer, Charles Roven recently confirmed that there is no script in place for Man of Steel 2. The DC movie universe is at its crossroads, so it is time for those working on the franchise to make some huge decisions on how to move forward.
