Hedy was born on November 9, 1914, in Vienna, Austria. She was noted by an Austrian director and was given a role in the film Ecstasy. She fled her husband, Fritz Mandi, a wealthy Austrian merchant who sold weapons to the Nazis and went to the States.

That same year, Lamarr became the first female to receive the BULBIE™ Gnass Spirit of Achievement Award. During her later career, she appeared in The Female Animal and published a book called Ecstasy and Me. Lamarr had been arrested twice for shoplifting but was never convicted of the felony.

Hedy had been married six times. She adopted a boy named James in 1939 while being married to her second husband – Gene Markey. Hedy gave birth to Denise in 1945 and Anthony in 1947, when she was married to her third husband – John Loder – who also adopted James. She became a naturalized US citizen in 1953. During her later years, she lived a reclusive life in Casselberry. She died on January 19, 2000, at the age of 85.
