During the last week’s Comic-Con Experience in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Warner Bros. released the logos of their upcoming DC Comics-based movies, which set the internet buzzing about the films that were missing from that slate. Prominent among those were, Gotham City Sirens a planned spin-off from Suicide Squad featuring Harley Quinn, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy. Since there is a number of films which are reportedly under development and based on the beloved anti-hero character played by Margot Robbie, it is quite possible that one of them might get ditched on the way. However, director of Suicide Squad, David Ayer assured fans about that not being the case here.
“It’s in development,” Ayer told Collider during promotions of his latest Netflix crime/fantasy movie Bright. However, he didn’t share any details.
His comments have come almost four months after an unnamed studio source had stated, “Harley, Catwoman and Poison Ivy are super-important to us,” trashing a rumor claiming that Gotham City Sirens has been scrapped in favour of a Joker and Harley Quinn based film on the WB slate.
The news about Gotham City Sirens was first heard in May last year, and it was reportedly a film led by Harley Quinn. Things started shaping up a year back when Ayer (Suicide Squad) came on board as the director while Margot Robbie is supposed to be the lead actress and executive producer of the movie.
Ayer had earlier clarified his decision of choosing Gotham City Sirens over Suicide Squad 2. He said, “It’s a story about three fantastic women who’re trying to find their way in the world, and realize that they have more power together than they do individually. I have daughters, and I want to create something that might be able to help them get along in the world a little bit.”
The logos shared by WB at the Comic-Con Experience were Aquaman, Wonder Woman 2, Flashpoint, Suicide Squad 2, Shazam!, Batgirl, Green Lantern Corps, The Batman and Justice League Dark which a lot of people believe to be the studio’s current focus. Other than Gotham City Sirens, the much-touted absentees were Cyborg, Deathstroke, Harley Quinn, Joker & Harley Quinn, Nightwing and a Joker origin film.
