Carpenter was born in Las Vegas, Nevada, daughter of a salesman Don Carpenter and mother who was a bird sanctuary worker. Charisma is of Spanish, German and French descent. She performed with her song and dance troupe when she was nine in the Las Vegas area.

When Carpenter was 15, her parents moved to Baja California, Mexico and then to San Diego, California. She attended her High School there. She traveled throughout Europe after her graduation and when returned she worked various jobs. She worked as an aerobics instructor, a video store clerk and also in property management.

In the year 1991, Charisma Carpenter and her two friends were attacked on the beach of San Diego while swimming. The attacker, Henry Hubbard Jr. was a former San Diego police officer and a serial rapist. He attempted to subdue her two male friends at gunpoint which led to a struggle. Two friends and Hubbard were shot and Hubbard fled the scene.

Charisma Carpenter brought the beach flashlight carried by Hubbard as evidence. It was proved to be the key evidence and Hubbard was arrested, convicted and sentenced for 56 years for rapes and robberies. Charisma Carpenter waited tables to save money for her college in Los Angeles and was discovered by a commercial agent.

This led her to land a role in more than twenty commercials. In 1996, she auditioned for the title role but got cast as Cordelia Chase in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She continued the role of Cordelier Chase in the spin of series Angel for next 4 years. Carpenter is married to Damian Hardy in her home to Las Vegas and gave birth to her son in March 2003.
